THE ‘2 LAKES TRAIL’ 10K & HALF MARATHON @ Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre
May 7 @ 10:00 am

2 LAKES, 2 DAMS, 2 FANTASTIC TRAIL ROUTES!

The 2 LAKES TRAIL HALF MARATHON & 10k events are based high up on the Denbigh Moors, taking in the reservoirs of Alwen and Llyn Brenig. The routes stay well above the 300m contour throughout and take in lakeside tracks, more technical woodland sections, moorland paths and some fast dirt track and minor road. The race HQ is the excellent Brenig Visitor centre, and here you can find registration, parking, excellent facilities (lovely cake!!) and the start/finish area a short walk away.

Jenny Douglas did the Half Marathon in 2016, and said ‘I was definitely having fun there – my favourite race to date!’

The route for the HALF MARATHON enjoys a gentle start alongside the Eastern shore of Llyn Brenig, and crosses the moorland at the Northern end of the lake to begin a loop around to the Nature Reserve and the eventually the footbridge at the Alwen Reservoir. An ascent to over 400m then follows and the run back to cross the spectacular Alwen dam, and the final climb to the Brenig dam and the finish line! A beautiful Half Marathon route – one that’ll stay with you :-)

KEY INFO

Registration: 8.30 – 9.30am

Start time: 10am

Distance: 13.1 miles

Ascent: 1210ft

Feed stations? Yes, 3 along the route

Entry on day? Dependant on pre entry

A map and profile of the 2 LAKES HALF MARATHON can be found HERE

The new 2 LAKES 10k route starts at the finish area for the Half, and makes it’s way across the dam, and at the far end takes a right turn to descend towards Pentrellyncymer. After a really nice, fast moorland section, the route crosses the road and you’ll soon meet the shores of the Alwen Reservoir. Across the dam here, and now following the same approach to the finish as the Half route – with a fair amount of climbing to the downhill sprint to the finish, where you started!

KEY INFO

Registration: 9 – 10am

Start time: 10.15am

Distance: 10k

Ascent: 203m/666ft

Feed stations? Yes, at Halfway and at the finish line.

Entry on day? Dependant on pre entry

A map and profile of the 2 LAKES 10K can be found HERE

Participants start and finish their journey around these beautiful routes, at the dam on Llyn Brenig, high up on the Denbigh Moors.

THE RACES HAVE A COMBINED ENTRY LIMIT OF 200, PRE ENTRY IS ADVISED.

We would like to thank The Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre, Welsh Water/Dwr Cymru and National Resources Wales for their assistance in putting on both events.

The routes are marked throughout and marshals will be present to guide you around the scenic trail, and you’ll be able to replenish at the 3 feed stations along the route.

Leg 1 Runner – Ascent only

Leg 2 Runner – Descent only

Electronic timing with RaceTek gives Up, Down and Overall splits.

The race HQ and the start/finish point of the race is the Golden Lion pub Llangynhafal, where there is camping available and B&B accommodation also, in this lovely pub which has won CAMRA awards in the past.

This new event is completed in teams of 2. It’s very simple in theory – 1 runner runs up to the summit of Moel Famau, then hands over the timing band to their teammate who descends as quickly as possible to the finish! The initial section through the fields is marked and MUST be followed, however after a few hundred metres and once out onto the open hillside, YOU choose your route! For descending runners, it’s obviously the other way around – descend via whichever route you want, until the final approach to the finish where you pick up the marked route through the finishing fields.

We recommend that Leg 2 runners are to be in position no later than 7.30pm. It is up to Leg 2 runners themselves to get to the summit promptly, in time for their run, and Leg 1 runners off of the summit safely after their run. The summit is a walk of about 50-60 minutes up and a jog taking about 20-25 minutes down, from the HQ. The marshals at the summit will guide Leg 2 runners to the correct area for changeover. Leg 1 runners will approach the Jubilee Tower and go through the funnel on the South side of it, where a marshal will dib the timing band, then runners will run around the Tower in an anti-clockwise direction, before handing over to their teammate, waiting on the North side of the tower, to start their descent.

Upon finishing, the results will be available promptly, including overall times, ascent time and descent time splits.

Prizes will be awarded in the post race presentation at the HQ.

PLEASE NOTE: This event will be pre entry only. Our desire to keep the event friendly and personable, coupled with the limited parking arrangements at the HQ, means that numbers are strictly limited to 50 teams.

The Clwydian 5 is for those who want a challenging run in beautiful surroundings, but don’t fancy the longer equivalents which accompany this race. The route starts and finishes in the back garden of the Golden Lion Inn, Llangynhafal and involves 1633ft of ascent over it’s 5 miles. The route will be well marked and marshalled throughout and is a great chance for those that like the shorter distances to get involved in this little festival of running in the Clwydian Hills!
